In one Tom’s Guide comparison, the iPhone 17 Pro Max scored 3,871 in Geekbench single-core testing, compared with 3,785 for the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Samsung reversed the result in multi-core, scoring 11,563 compared with 9,968 for the iPhone.
That sounds complicated, but the practical difference is easier to understand.

Apple’s A19 Pro is built around speed and efficiency. Apple says the chip, combined with a new vapor-chamber cooling system, can deliver up to 40% better sustained performance than the previous generation.
In everyday use, that translates into the kind of responsiveness most people expect from a flagship phone. Apps open quickly, animations feel smooth and demanding tasks such as video editing don’t feel like a struggle.
The iPhone also has a strong advantage in single-core performance. That’s useful for many everyday tasks because phones often rely heavily on single-core speed when opening apps or handling smaller workloads.
For someone who mainly uses Instagram, YouTube, Chrome, WhatsApp, photography and occasional gaming, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is already more than fast enough.
Galaxy S26 Ultra Performance
Samsung has closed the performance gap considerably.
The Galaxy S26 Ultra uses a customized Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. Samsung says the chip delivers up to a 19% CPU performance improvement and a 39% improvement in NPU performance for AI-related workloads.
Where Samsung gets particularly interesting is heavy multitasking and graphics.
In Tom’s Guide testing, the Galaxy S26 Ultra produced a higher multi-core Geekbench score and a higher 3DMark Wild Life Extreme score than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Samsung reached 6,645 in the graphics test, compared with 5,855 for Apple’s phone.
That makes the Galaxy especially appealing if you regularly play demanding games or run several heavy tasks at once.
Which Is Faster for Gaming?
This is no longer an easy win for the iPhone.
The Galaxy S26 Ultra has a strong graphics advantage in several benchmark tests, while the iPhone can maintain excellent performance over longer workloads.
Tom’s Guide’s 20-minute 3DMark stress test actually gave the iPhone a better stability result: 53.9% compared with 65.2% for Samsung.
So Samsung may deliver higher peak graphics performance, while the iPhone can remain more consistent during sustained workloads.
For everyday gaming, though, both phones are excellent.
What About Everyday Speed?
Here’s the part benchmark charts don’t always explain.
You are unlikely to notice a dramatic speed difference when opening Gmail, checking Instagram, taking a photo or watching Netflix.
Both phones are fast enough that the software experience becomes more important than the processor.
If you prefer iOS, the iPhone will feel faster to you because it is familiar. If you prefer Android and One UI, Samsung may feel more natural even when benchmark numbers are close.
